On 2nd May 2019 the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, played host to the LRWA’s first Charity Dragon Boat Regatta. Open to everyone in the roofing and waterproofing industry, the event attracted 110 people, including contractors and manufacturers from across the UK.
The regatta was launched to raise vital funds for the LRWA’s nominated charity, Mind. Thanks to the efforts of all those involved, more than £1,400 has been raised so far, but with donations still coming in, this figure is set to rise even further.
Dragon Boat Champions
A total of 10 teams battled it out on the hotel’s lake in 30ft dragon boats, each comprising of 10 paddlers and one drummer. Showing their competitive streak, each team had given themselves a name and created matching logos and squad T-shirts.
Their challenge was to race 180m in a series of heats with the four fastest going through to a semi-final. The top two teams went head to head in a nail-biting final race.
Following some impressive displays of paddle power, Proteus Spartans (Proteus Waterproofing) emerged victorious taking the gold medal. Team Popeye (London Seamless Flat Roofing) picked up silver and Moy Story (Moy Materials) went home with the bronze medal.
The prize for best team logo also went to Proteus Spartans who won a Golden Duck Award for their efforts!
Reflecting on the event and of his team’s victory, Jordan Bailey, director of Proteus Waterproofing said: “It was an exhilarating day with lots of twists and turns, which not only raised vital funds for Mind, but was a great opportunity for people from across our sector to come together to network, compete and have a thoroughly brilliant day. Congratulations must go out to the LRWA team and their organising partners for all their hard work and fantastic administration. Most importantly, everyone who took part showed a real passion for the cause and gave it their all. We are delighted to have won and hope to be able to defend both our titles all over again next year!”
Building on Success
In the LRWA’s 40th anniversary year, we are proud to have delivered this new fundraising initiative and would like to thank everyone that supported us. Mental illness is a major issue affecting the entire construction industry, so as an association we want to show our support and encourage our members and others across the sector to do the same.
Combined with the funds raised at our Awards and Gala Dinner event, we hope to raise more than £3,000 for Mind. We are also confident that the dragon boat regatta will become a regular fixture in the LRWA’s event calendar and with the support of all those involved in roofing, will become even bigger and better, ensuring we can make a difference to a very worthwhile cause.
