Background

This former department store had been standing empty for a number of months in the centre of Glasgow City and numerous attempts to stop the water ingress into the building had failed. The existing single ply waterproofing system had failed extensively due to the heavy foot traffic to service various plant across the area.

Challenges
The roof area was heavily populated with numerous plant, including air handling and conditioning units making the project very detailed and awkward for more traditional roofing systems. Hot works was also a limiting issue due to the existing substrate and a large glazed section within the roof area, and so a cold applied liquid system was the ideal choice.

The site had numerous issues of sensitivity, requiring consideration. Being a city centre project issues surrounding any potential smell of liquid applied systems for the surrounding properties was a major consideration when choosing the correct solution. During the consultation, the moving of heavy materials to site and then up onto the roof was going to set its own challenge and so a simple lightweight solution was also needed.

To avoid repeating problems from previous coverings an urgent need to protect the roof surface from the heavy foot traffic was also required and an anti-slip walkway was paramount.

Solution
Due to the complexity of the site the ideal solution was to use Sealoflex Enviroflex liquid- applied waterproofing. Icopal worked closely with roofing contractor, G. Brolly Roofing, to secure the works and support was continued throughout the project until completion. The Enviroflex Liquid waterproofing system was selected due to its solvent free, no odour properties. Its moisture triggering qualities also lent itself perfectly for the weather conditions and reduced curing times throughout the project.

Enviroflex liquid applied waterproofing solution also blends seamlessly around the awkward more challenging areas of the roof, in and around the heavy plant areas and to the glazed section within the roof area. The introduction of Enviroflex Walkway System adapted seamlessly to the roof area allowing future servicing access to the plant and glazing section.

This project was completed ahead of schedule, and due to the simplicity and versatility of the Enviroflex Liquid Applied Waterproofing System further roofs within the project have been added.
