We’d like you all to welcome Matthew Sexton, market development and technical standards director at BMI, and the LRWA’s representative on the B/546 committee that is responsible for BS 6229:2018 ‘flat roofs with continuously supported flexible waterproof coverings’.

Matthew has been instrumental in much of the collaborative work relating to the Review of the Ban on Combustible Materials and the response to the draft BS 8579. This British Standard offers guidance on the design of balconies and terraces as well as their component parts. The draft document was sent out for public consultation by BSI (British Standard Institute) in January 2020, and closed in March.

Matthew has worked within the construction industry for more than 30 years, starting out training as a quantity surveyor, and progressed into more technical roles. During his experience, Matthew has developed a specific interest in maintaining industry standards and passive fire protection, and is also a member of The Institute of Roofing (IoR)and Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE).

In his role with the LRWA, he will be applying his skills and experience to flat roofing applications and to help influence the industry for the better.

Matthew will also be working closely with Mike Bradbury, liquid product manager at Bauder and Vice Chair of the LRWA’s Technical Committee, and Steve Henshaw, technical director at Polyroof and Vice Chairman of the LRWA, on the technical committee.
