Special Metals Wiggins Limited of Hereford deals in specialist metals and produces nickel alloy components for Rolls Royce turbo engines and the Ministry of Defence, amongst others.
The Challenge
The Wiggins building is half a century old and has suffered due to the hostile manufacturing environment within. The production of special metal components involves the use of harsh chemical processes which have conspired to erode the original profiled metal roof system.
The original profiled metal decking was covered with a layer of fibreboard and a layer of felt. Deterioration was so bad in places that entire areas of the roof needed replacing. The expansive roof area consists of 13 bays in between a series of northlights. Four of these bays were so fragile that it was dangerous for contractors to walk on them.
The Solution
Central Roofing & Building Services Ltd of Hereford specialise in liquid coating, built up felt and single ply roofing systems. Starting from the less damaged areas of the roof, the company removed the original roofing and replaced the profile metal deck with a spacer support system onto which was laid fibreboard and then the Mach One system from IKO.
Due to the complex detail of the upstands around the northlights, the remaining areas of mineral felt have been overlayed using IKO’s Polimar System.

The Mach One roofing system is a single layer bituminous membrane that can be installed without the need for any naked flames or hot bitumen pots as it is mechanically fixed to the deck or bonded with PU adhesive. The laps are sealed using a hot air welding machine or hand gun.
Mach One is a 4.75mm thick single layer membrane made with 16% SBS modified bitumen on a glass stabilised polyester base to give exceptional strength.
