- Roofing Matters: Safety, Performance and Sustainability
The LRWA’s CEO, Sarah Spink, will chair this online seminar from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), exploring how better design and planning can improve roofing safety and how flat roofs can contribute to a more sustainable built environment.
The LRWA is pleased to support the CIOB’s Roofing Matters: Safety, Performance and Sustainability seminar. The session will explore how CDM, design decisions and construction planning influence roofing safety. It will cover the responsibilities of roof system designers and specialist roofing contractors acting as principal contractors, particularly during refurbishment projects.
- Safer Roofing Through Design and Planning
The seminar will consider the importance of suitable pre-construction information, along with the co-ordination and management of temporary works. It will look at how risks including work at height, fragile roofs, hot work, occupational health and adverse weather can be reduced through better design and planning at the earliest stages of a project.
- Roofing and Sustainability
The session will also examine how flat roofs can support decarbonisation, climate adaptation and circular economy principles, highlighting the role that roofing systems play in creating more sustainable and resilient buildings.
- Who Should Attend
The seminar is relevant to anyone involved in the design, specification, planning or installation of roofing systems, including roof system designers, specialist roofing contractors and principal contractors. The session is free for CIOB members and £25 for non-members. It can contribute to your annual CPD return and should be logged accordingly.

Sarah Spink, Chief Executive Officer, Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association
Sarah has worked in the liquid roofing and waterproofing industry since 2006 and became the first CEO of the LRWA in March 2017. She first became involved with the Association in 2009 while working for a liquid roofing manufacturer in commercial and technical roles, and joined the LRWA Board in 2013. Sarah is also an Officer of the Board of the Construction Products Association and Co-Chair of Sector Lead Group 5, and serves on the CIOB Roofing Advisory Panel.
Gary Walpole, CMIOSH PISEP REnvP, Technical Safety, Health and Environment Officer, National Federation of Roofing Contractors
Gary has worked in the roofing industry since 1985, beginning his career from a practical roofing background. He represents the roofing sector on national safety, health and environmental matters, with a focus on safer roof design and construction, CDM responsibilities, work at height, fragile roofs, occupational health and fire prevention. Gary also chairs the CONIAC Fire Safety Working Group.
Tom Raftery, Head of Sustainability, Bauder
Tom has over 25 years of experience in the flat roofing industry, specialising in green roofs and solar PV. He has led industry research and guidance on integrating building-applied photovoltaics (BAPV) with flat and green roof systems, and currently chairs the IMA and SPRA sustainability committees.
